The AEA R92 is AEA's near-field ribbon microphone, built for close-up work on loud, transient-heavy sources like brass, guitar cabs, kick drum, and percussion. Unlike traditional ribbons, which are typically placed a couple of feet back, the R92 is designed to be placed close to the source.
The mic offers two distinct tonal options in one body: the front side is brighter and more crisp, the back side darker and smoother, useful for taming harsh sources like trumpet or strings. AEA describes the overall character as having a thick low end, a hefty midrange, and a smooth top end, sharing a family resemblance with the classic R84 but with a more pronounced midrange and reduced proximity effect. It's a passive design, so pairs well with signal boosters like the CloudLifter or high gain preamps with high input impedance (AEA recommends their own RPQ3, RPQ500, TRP500, or TRP3 preamps to unlock the ribbons true potential).
AEA R92 Ribbon Microphone Key Features:
- Large Ribbon Geometry transducer
- Solid bass and smooth treble response
- Fast, accurate transient reproduction
- Low self noise and high SPL capability
- Excellent off-axis frequency response
- Wide-band response from 20Hz to 20kHz
- Distinct character of front and rear sides
Well suited to brass, guitar amps, kick drum, percussion, and other loud, close-mic'd sources where a traditional ribbon's proximity effect would get in the way.
Mix Mag's Kevin Becca reviewed the R92 and says that the R92 is "a hands-down winner at close quarters" and "is unequaled in its price range"
