Extended Low End Response and High SPL Handling
The R88 is built around two of AEA's large, pure aluminium, low tension elements, identical to those found in the R44. The low tension design helps achieve the lowest possible resonant frequency which allows the R88 to naturally reproduce frequencies down to 20Hz, giving it a massive, natural low end that smaller ribbons can't replicate.
The large ribbons in the R88 have more room to move than smaller ribbons, allowing them to handle higher SPL than you would usually expect from a ribbon. The R88 is rated to handle 165dB at 1kHz, meaning you can safely place it in front of a loud horn section or as a front of kit mic for heavy drums without worrying about any change in sound.
