The AKG C414 XLII Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone is part of AKG's C414 flagship line, built around the same capsule lineage as the vintage AKG C12 from 1953. It differs from the C414 XLS in one main respect, the capsule, giving it a slight presence boost and spatial character AKG positions as reminiscent of the original C12, useful for lead vocals and solo instruments so they sit forward in a dense mix. The unrivalled up-front sound is also well-known for distant miking applications like classic music recording or drum room miking.

The C414 XLII has nine selectable polar patterns (cardioid, omnidirectional, figure-8, hypercardioid, and wide cardioid, plus four intermediate settings) to cover most studio and stage applications from a single mic. Three attenuation levels (-6, -12, -18dB) allow close-miking of loud sources up to 158dB SPL without overload, and switchable high pass filter (160, 80, 40Hz) helps control unwanted low end on particular sources. An overload warning LED with peak hold catches transient spikes, and for live sound or permanent installations, all front-panel controls can be locked to prevent accidental changes mid-performance.

The C414 family has been one of the world's most widely-used and respected studio and stage microphones in audio history. You'll find a 414 or a replica design in almost any studio in the world. You cannot go wrong with the real deal, the C414 is a famous workhorse for a reason.
