The R84 is AEA's compact take on the classic RCA 44 ribbon sound, built as a lighter, more affordable alternative to the vintage RCA 44BX. It shares the same Big Ribbon element, transformer, and core mechanical design as the original 44 (now sold as the AEA R44C), but in a much lighter body with an extended top end, more manageable proximity effect, and better manoeuvrability.
AEA describes the R84's overall character as warm, smooth, and detailed, with an accentuated midrange, extended lows, and a slight high-frequency roll-off that reduces sibilance, making it a common first choice for vocals and other sources that can sound harsh on condensers. As a passive ribbon mic, the R84 performs best with preamps that have at least 60dB of gain and high input impedance, or with a signal booster like the CloudLifter.
